Center for European Integration Studies (ZEI)
The Center for European Integration Studies (ZEI) is a transdisciplinary research and post-graduate education institute of the University of Bonn. The ZEI was founded in 1995 as part of the Bonn-Berlin-Act by a decision of the University Senate and carries out future-oriented research on unresolved issues of European integration and the role of the EU in the world.
25 years of transdisciplinary work at ZEI
Since 1998, the ZEI "Master of European Studies - Governance and Regulation" has offered postgraduates the opportunity to study legal, economic and political science aspects of European integration in an international atmosphere. Co-directed by Prof Dr Christian Koenig and Prof Dr Ludger Kühnhardt, the one-year full-time Master's programme was taught in English by an international faculty of renowned academics and practitioners. In its 25th anniversary year, the transdisciplinary Master's programme was discontinued in coordination with the university in view of Prof Dr Ludger Kühnhardt's retirement in the summer semester of 2024.
In 25 years of ZEI, around 700 research projects have been successfully completed. With a network of scientific collaborations spread all over the world, over 600 graduates of the Master's programme, researchers from all continents, over 500 employees and numerous publications, participation in scientific and political advisory activities as well as lectures and regular media presence, ZEI has successfully established itself as a research institute in the European scientific landscape.
