Research, education and outreach: 1995-2015

ZEI was founded in 1995 as part of the Bonn-Berlin-arrangement. Until now, more than 700 research projects were conducted by all together 500 researchers and staff members. The results of ZEI research can be found in more than 600 own publications of the institute and in innumerable external publications. More than 200 international visiting scholars have spent time at ZEI, whose directors have supervised more than 100 dissertations and “habilitationen”. ZEI’s “Master of European Studies” has been successfully concluded by almost 500 fellows since 1998. ZEI alumni come from more than 60 countries around the world, where they have embarked on impressive careers in academia, public service and the private sector. ZEI Master of European Studies
Ten Years of Excellence 1998-2008

Since 1998 ZEI has been offering a “Master of European Studies”, one of the most innovative and successful postgraduate programs of its kind. At the conclusion of its tenth class, ZEI published a brochure to inform about structure and development of the first decade of this postgraduate program which offers highly successful career perspectives.

ZEI Working Paper

The "ZEI Working Paper" prominently comment on the economic and fiscal implications of the European integration process. In the working paper series, ZEI hass published the following papers between 1997 and 2012: More...

ZEI Studies in European Economics and Law

The "ZEI Studies in European Economics and Law" in the Springer-Verlag GmbH, Heidelberg, intensively dealed with diverse economic issues and questions of the European integration process. The series’ articles primarily emphasize on monetary and economic topics. The "ZEI Studies in European Economics and Law" were edited by Prof. Dr. Jürgen von Hagen between 2000 and 2004.

ZEI Regional Integration Observer

The “ZEI Regional Integration Observer” is focusing on comparative topics of region-building since 2007. Region-building is gaining global relevance worldwide. In collaboration with aspects from all over the world, the “ZEI Regional Integration Observer” appears three times a year. It addresses academics, politicians and the interested public about recent trends in region-building in all regions outside Europe. The “ZEI Regional Integration Observer” is a medium to deepen understanding for the independency among the various regional groupings around the world.

ZEI EU-Turkey-Monitor

The “ZEI EU-Turkey-Monitor”  accompanies the process of negotiations between the European Union and Turkey. The “ZEI EU-Turkey-Monitor”, prepared in close collaboration with Turkish colleagues, appeared three times per year. The “ZEI EU-Turkey-Monitor” understands itself as a medium to strengthen the dialogue between Turkey and Europe. European Integration and South Eastern Europe

With the end of the Yugoslavian Wars ZEI actively supported the academic reconstruction of the region in the context of the EU Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe. The “Task Force South Eastern Europe” was established at ZEI between 2001 and 2004. Among its activities was the “SOE Monitor” aimed at making politics, academic, business and media better acquainted with developments in the region. At the same time, the “SOE Monitor” informed about the activities of ZEI’s Task Force.

In the context of its “Task Force South Eastern Europe” ZEI contributed between 2001 and 2004 to the development of appropriate teaching material for European Studies in South Eastern Europe and supported the establishment of the “Bulgarian-Romanian Interuniversity Europe Center” (BRIE) in Rousse (Bulgaria). As part of this work, the publications of the ZEI Series “European Integration and South Eastern Europe” (SEE Paper) and the “HERTIE Lectures” (BRIE Paper), which ZEI coordinated, received broad reputation across South Eastern Europe

Regional Integration Observer

In the years 2013-2016, the Regional Integration Observer (RIO) accompanied the ZEI-WAI Research Cooperation as a newsletter. It reported on, at the time, current events in the framework of the project and in European and West African regional integration. It was built on the ZEI Regional Integration Observer  which was published at ZEI in the years 2007-2012.

WAI-ZEI Papers

“WAI-ZEI Papers” analysed obstacles to sustainable regional integration in West Africa in the fields of economics, law and politics. In this context, they took into account the European integration experience. “WAI-ZEI Papers” were published in the framework of the ZEI-WAI research cooperation which was sponsored by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the years 2010-2016. They were written by researchers associated with this project.

ZEI Annual Reports

The "ZEI Annual Reports" have been documenting and informing about research activities of the Center for European Integration Studies and what it has to offer since 1996.

ZEI Report

During the first phase of its work, the “ZEI Report” gave a regular overview of the working priorities at the Center for European Integration Studies. Between 1998 and 2004, the “ZEI Report” helped to project the Center for European Integration Studies as an innovative and multidimensional research institute among the broader European public interested in matters of European integration and their academic reflection.
