New book release: Die Integration der ultra-peripheren Regionen in die Europäische Union

Daniela Vogt, Die Integration der ultra-peripheren Regionen in die Europäische Union. Wandel der europäischen Politik gegenüber den überseeischen Besitzungen von Rom (1957) bis Lissabon (2009), Schriften des Zentrum für Europäische Integrationsforschung (ZEI), Vol 75, Baden-Baden: Nomos, 2011, 235 pages, ISBN 978-3-8329-6580-0

In a new study in the context of the ZEI publication series, Daniela Vogt analyses the relations between the EU and its outermost regions by describing the specific level of integration with the core of the EU. The description of the historical process of integration as it developed from the time of the Treaties of Rome until the Treaty of Lisbon is enriched by an overview of the past history of European overseas expansion and colonization. Facts and figures of each overseas region linked to the EU today characterize the regional distinctions and similarities. Finally, examples of the current strategies and instruments of support and European harmonization illustrate the complex relationship between the European Union and its overseas regions. The study concludes with an outlook on the future chances and difficulties of further integrating with the EU.
