Euro-Mediterranean Partnership

ZEI analyzes the consequences of the “Arab Spring” for the relationship between Europe and its southern neighborhood. For this purpose, theoretical and policy-oriented research work on the Neighborhood Policy of the EU as well as pragmatic research cooperation with countries of the Southern Mediterranean is relevant. Currently, established research methods and instruments have to be tested against the new realities and on-going changes in Northern Africa and the Middle East and possibly be adapted.

Since its foundation, ZEI has been a member of the Euro-Mediterranean Study Commission (EuroMesco) and has been actively engaged in the networking activities of the most important research association of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership. These activities included several ZEI Mediterranean Forums, research in study groups, exchange of researchers and publications.

Since 2007, ZEI regularly conducts research and exchange activities with the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) in Malta, which currently comprises of:

  • The exchange of lecturers, researchers and staff.
  • Workshops with diplomats from Arab countries and ZEI Fellows on selected problems of the Union of the Mediterranean.
  • The development of a longer-term research project.

In the course of the project, the following workshops took place.
